This is a roundup post that is basically a collection of autumn recipes that make the most of its particular flavours, vegetables and fruit.
These aren’t new recipes, so I hope that you’re not disappointed but they’re recipes for chillier days that use all those warming spices and vegetables that appear at this time of the year. Whether you call this time of transition into winter, autumn or Fall, I hope that you find something to enjoy.
Apples are plentiful just now. If you visit the Farmer’s market you’ll probably find all kinds of uncommon varieties that are especially delicious. Why not try these muffins?
Sweet treats and puddings for Autumn
How about using a few in this dessert recipe? Warming on cooler days, it’s satisfying and makes really good use of whatever apples you have to hand. For a short time, you can pick blackberries from the hedgerows for free but make sure that you gather them away from roads.
If you’d like something warming to dunk in your coffee, then there’s always these amazing Ginger Cookies. I love these… warm ginger spices, lovely chewy texture. They’re firm around the edges and soft in the centres and wonderfully gingery.
Autumn Recipes: Breakfasts
Breakfasts are always important but when you’re heading out of the door on a dark, cool morning a good breakfast will help you feel warmer as well as more alert. How about Apple Cinnamon Overnight Oats? Overnight oats make a brilliant breakfast as they can be prepared ahead of time and just picked up in the morning.
Use this Granola recipe and have a really flavourful granola cereal waiting for you in the morning. Pour it out into a bowl and add your favourite toppings. Will it be milk (dairy or non-dairy) or yoghurt? Any fresh fruit around that you can add?
Autumn Recipes: Ideas for main meals
I don’t know about you but I always feel hungrier when the weather gets cooler and I welcome something warm and filling. When you’re feeding a family too, it helps to have accompaniments so that everyone can dig in and feel satisfied when the meal comes to an end. I think that these recipes lend themselves to that.
Autumn is the season for all kinds of funghi and this recipe makes the most of the edible kind.
If you need something that is quick and filling, how about this Dal recipe, It’s full of gentle spices, (add more heat if you wish) and can be served with a quick bread such as our recipe for yoghurt flatbreads.
Autumn Recipes: Soups
It’s no secret that I love soup and I do have a few soup recipes on the blog. Some of them are particularly relevant to Autumn. How about Spicy Pumpkin Soup?
Another lovely soup for this time of the year is a classic Leek and Potato Soup. Look out for leeks at the Farmer’s Market, the fresher the leeks are the better the flavours.
As both of these soups are pureed you could even pack them into a flask or other suitable container and take them off on a hike through the fields and woods with you. Getting outdoors to enjoy all the colours of the season is a great thing to do.
I hope that you try one or even some of these recipes and make your autumn a little bit nicer.
