Homemade Garlic Croutons; Crispy and delicious

This Homemade garlic croutons recipe will help you create the best, most delicious croutons to add to homemade soups or salads. They add another flavour and texture dimension. Baked in the oven they're super-quick and easy to make.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley substitute other herbs if you wish
  • 12 ounces bread
  • 2 garlic cloves pressed
  • salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 400F/200C/180 C Fan
  • Cut the bread into cubes approximately 3/4 - 1 inch or 2cm to 2.5cm in size. You don't need to too precise. Add them to a roomy mixing bowl.
  • Add the herbs, salt, garlic (which has been pressed through a garlic press or very finely chopped) Add the oil.
  • Mix everything together with a fork or use your hands. Make sure that the bread is completely covered in garlic, herbs and olive oil. Spread the bread mixture out on the baking tray.
  • Place the tray in the oven for up to 10 minutes. Check every 5 minutes and move the bread around to ensure even baking. The bread will take different lengths of time to turn golden brown depending on how fresh the bread is. Keep watch.
  • The croutons are ready when they have turned golden brown. Leave them on the tray to cool a little before serving.

Variations:
  • Use a different herb – theme the herb to go with the soup or salad. For example, add a few chilli flakes and coriander for a Mexican vibe. Use oregano or thyme for a more Italian feel.
  • Cook in a frying pan, if you don’t wish to warm up the oven. Use the same ingredients and make it in the same way.
  • Sprinkle with parmesan cheese. You can get vegetarian and vegan varieties of this cheese these days. Garlic and Parmesan croutons are quite lovely.
  • Bake with a few chilli flakes for a subtle or fiery heat depending on how much you add.
  • Cook in a frying pan - keep stirring whilst the bread cooks. They are done when they take on a golden brown colour.
