Not all days are created equal and sometimes you ned a little indulgence to get you going. Fortunately, these Double Chocolate Chip Overnight Oats exist to do just that. They’re delicious and versatile. Make them ahead of time and whatever else happens you’ve got breakfast covered.

This Double Chocolate Chip Overnight oats recipe is both creamy and smooth. Its chocolatey base, made from oats, chia seeds, cocao, maple syrup and milk, lends itself to endless flavour additions. Feel free to add all kinds of fruit, nuts, seeds and even a drizzle of nut butter to it.

Ok, enough of why you might want this in your life, what does it actually contain.

Ingredients

  • Oats – these are an important source of fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Importantly, they can help keep you full until lunch.
  • Milk – adds a wealth of vitamins and minerals. If your preferred milk is plant based then try and select versions with added vitamins and minerals. I really like almond or hazelnut milk in this recipe.
  • Cocao – cocao is a bit of a superfood containing minerals and antioxidants. Importantly, it’s what adds the gorgeous chocolatey-ness.
  • Chia seeds – these are also superfood heroes being high in omega-3 and fatty acids which give you a great boost in the morning. They also add some important fibre to your diet.
  • Maple syrup – this is present as a sweetner and really brings out the chocolate flavour.
  • Chocolate chips – these are entirely optional but they do add a nice amount of texture and sweetness. Use your favourite kind, milk, dark, white or dairy-free chocolate chips. They’re all lovely and definitely worth trying at least once.
  • Vanilla extract – this is a flavour enchancer and adds a lovely creamy note to the oats.
  • Salt – this tiny pinch of salt is again a flavour enhancer. It helps to deepen the flavour of the chocolatey oats but don’t worry this small amount doesn’t taste salty.

How to make Double Chocolate Chip Overnight Oats

These are really quick to put together. If you know that you are going to add extra toppings, such as fruit then choose a container with enough room to just pile it on the top. Saves time and washing-up. That has to be good.

To make your oats get the ingredients out and add each one to the container, stir a couple of times and store in the fridge until needed. If you are adding fruit, nuts or drizzles of nut butters or extra syrup this can mostly be done the night before too. I personally don’t like doing this with bananas as I think they deteriorate a little overnight. Anyway, they’re really easy to slice them up in the morning.

Meal-prep Overnight Oats

Being able to meal-prep breakfasts can be really useful in a busy life. These Double Chocolate Overnight Oats are really easy to meal-prep for the days ahead. You can choose whether to make up 4 mornings worth of oats in one large bowl and share the mix evenly between containers or make them individually. These oats last well for that length of time after that I think they begin to deteriorate a little.

There are a couple of things to think about. Both of which are fairly obvious but are easy to forget in the heat of the moment. Do you have enough space to store your meal-prepped oats in the fridge? Also, it is important to make sure that all of the ingredients will be within their expiry dates (use-by dates) when you come to actually eat them. So, check the dates on the milk you’re about to use or yogurt you may wish to top the oats off with.

Overnight Oats that have sat in the fridge for a few days may need a little more milk added before serving.

How long do they last in the refrigerator?

These overnight oats will last 4 days in the refrigerator. However, you need to ensure that the milk you are using does not exceed it’s ‘use-by’ date. If you want your oats to stay fresh for four days then the ingredients need to individually stay fresh for that long.

Additions and modifications to Double Chocolate Chip Overnight Oats

You may leave out the chocolate chips if actual chocolate is too much for you to think about for breakfast.

  • Add up to a 1/2 cup of fruit. Bananas, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries all go really well with these oats. Stick to one type or mix them up, it will look really pretty. Plus it will add yet more fibre, vitamins and minerals to turn this breakfast into a real treat.
  • Add upto a tablespoon of nut butter; hazelnut or almond butter go really well with this. Mix it into the oats or drizzle over the top. You may choose.
  • Chopped nuts, such as hazelnuts or almonds add a nice crunch as do sunflower seeds or toasted coconut.
  • A delicious dollop of yogurt. Coconut yogurt is really lovely with these flavours and it comes in dairy and non-dairy options. so, tuch into your favourite.
  • A pinch of chilli flakes. This is for the adventurous and adds just a tiny bit of heat but that depends of how much you add. Again it acts as a flavour enhancer and just makes everything else sing a little.

These Overnight oats are gluten-free providing you use certified gluten-free oats. Cocao and cocoa powders are gluten-free but if you substitute other hot chocolate powders you will need to check this on the label.

Are these Overnight Oats suitable for vegans?

This recipe is suitable for vegans and those on plant-based diets if you use a plant based milk. Also check that the chocolate and the cocoa are both suitable for vegans and vegetarians alike. Check out product labels for ingredient details to ensure peace of mind.
