Introduction to DIY Apple Pie Spice

This recipe is my absolute favourite blend for homemade Apple Pie Spice Mix. I’ve tried lots of subtly different spice combinations over the years and this is the recipe that I always come back to. I like the balance of these spices the best.

Apple Pie Spice Mix Ingredients: Choosing the Right Spices

The key to an exceptional apple spice mix lies in the balance of spices. This recipe shares our favourite mix but please feel free to experiment a little and make a few tweaks here and there to achieve your best combination. Crafting your own apple pie spice mix will feel quite rewarding.

  • cinnamon – another beloved spice of mine. This comes from the bark of a Cinnamomum tree and gives food a warm and delicious aroma. It’s available as sticks and as a ground spice. For this, the ground version is what we need.
  • cardamon – this spice mix uses the ground-up seeds of green cardamon. It has quite a strong, sweet flavour when added to dishes. It is possible to buy ground spices but you can easily grind your own. Get out the pestle and mortar or perhaps use a spice grinder. Some coffee grinders are also suitable to be used to grind up spices.
  • allspice – this is actually a berry that is dried. It looks a little like a black peppercorn. This can be bought as the berry or ground up ready to go.
  • ginger – a warm spice coming from the root or rhizome of the ginger plant. For this recipe, you will need the dried, ground variety.
  • nutmeg – is actually a seed. You don’t need very much of this as it’s strong and a little pungent. You can get this as a ground spice but I prefer to buy it as the seed itself. I grate off what I need and store the rest away until next time.

Using ground spices versus ground Spices

It has to be said that using whole spices will give you the freshest possible flavours and aromas, however, this recipe is designed to be quick and easy to do. There are a few spices that I only ever use as a whole spices such as nutmeg. Some ground spices can definitely have an aroma more like pencil shavings than the wonderful things they really should be. So, make your choice, are you going to mix the ground spices together or are you going to grind your own whole spices?

However, if you buy good quality ground spices and they get regularly refreshed and replaced you can make a good Apple Pie Spice mix that won’t disappoint.

Health Benefits and Nutritional Value

This isn’t something I generally think about when considering spices but they do contribute some valuable nutrients to our diets. Apple spice mix doesn’t just make your taste buds dance, it also brings health benefits. Many of the spices used have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making this mix a useful addition to caring for yourself.

Uses of Apple Spice Mix

There are many uses that an Apple Pie Spice Mix can be put to. It is so much more than one of the baking essentials for apple pie. This is a short list of just a few, however, you should know that anywhere that you see cinnamon used or mixed spice you can substitute Apple Pie spice in the same amount. It will alter the flavour a little but the finished baked goods will have a more complex flavour profile which can be extremely pleasing. So, be brave and try it.

Delicious Homemade Apple Pie

Imagine for a moment that it’s autumn, with an abundance of apples to be turned into wonderful baked treats. You need a few spices to really bring the flavours alive. This mixture makes a brilliantly easy apple pie seasoning. After all, an apple pie without a little apple pie spice mix is a little sad. This is a fantastic spice blend for apple pie, add this mix to your apple filling for a dessert that’s both extraordinary and will remind you of the glorious days of autumn.

When cooking or baking with this spice, use whatever amount the recipe you’re using suggests. If in the future you’d like a stronger flavour then be brave and add a little more.

Scrumptious Apple Spice Muffins

This spice mix is more than just a seasonal spice blend for pies however, it’s also great in muffins. Transform your morning with apple spice muffins. The aroma of baking muffins will make it hard to wait for them to come out of the oven. Use apple pie spice in this recipe instead of cinnamon and enjoy the wonderful flavours. How to store your Apple Pie Spice Mix

Store this spice mix in an airtight container and keep it in a dark cupboard to prolong the freshness of the flavours in the mix. I sometimes re-purpose old spice jars but then I have to remember to label them too.

Is this Spice Mix Gluten-Free?

This spice mix is gluten-free provided that all of the individual spices are gluten-free. Some brands add a little flour to prevent the spice from clumping up. Find yourself a gluten-free brand you can trust. It’s good to know that there are allergy-related websites out there too that can really point you in the right direction.
