Deliciously cream and incredibly simple to make at home. Peanut butter makes a wonderful spread to scoop from the jar and spread on a slice of fresh crusty bread or your favourite crackers. I spread it on toast, rice cakes add it to smoothies, soups and stews.

Making your own means that you can control the sweetness, crunchiness, saltiness, the smoothness and the creaminess.

I usually roast my own peanuts for making butter, just as I roast the almonds if I’m making Almond Butter but if you use dry roasted peanuts you can skip that step. It’s a method which is quick… really quick.

A note on nuts

If you’re buying dry-roasted nuts specially for making this peanut butter then please check the ingredients. Not all dry roasted peanuts are created equal. Some have quite a few additions such as herbs and sometimes spices. Obviously, whatever the flavour the nuts have, will transfer into your butter so choose wisely.

Making easy homemade peanut butter

Armed with a bag of peanuts? Let’s see how this goes. It’ll be lovely – have faith!

You will need a food processor to churn all the gorgeous nuts and get them to release the oils which go to making this butter so wonderful.

Dry roasted peanuts ready for blending

If you want a crunchy version, remove about a 1/4 cup or a small handful of chopped nuts, like in the picture below, and save them for adding in at the end.

Now you’re going to need a little patience. Start the processor again and let it blend away. Gradually you will begin to see the butter forming. It will clump up first of all and then turn into gloriously wonderful creamy butter. Now add any other ingredients. The salt is important as it really brings out the flavour of the nuts. Add in the maple syrup if you like a sweet version and don’t forget to add the ‘broken’ up nuts if you set some aside at the beginning to create a crunchy peanut butter.

That’s more or less it. Pour it into a nice jar and refrigerate. It will become less runny once it is cooler but that’s normal.
