Ever wondered how to get more fruit into your diet? Ever feel the need to spoil yourself? Strawberry and Banana Smoothie is a delicious little smoothie which can help with that.
Remember all of those smoothies that you had as a child, scarily pink and tooth-achingly sweet? I’m putting forward this healthier, easy Strawberry and Banana Smoothie hoping that it gives you that feel-good feeling, reminding you of happy times gone by. It is bound to be as much of a hit in your house as it is in mine.
This strawberry and banana smoothie recipe uses just 5 ingredients and tastes amazing. It is a wonderfully thick, pretty pink and the sweetness can be adjusted to your taste.
Smoothies are a fantastic way of starting the day especially when time in the morning is often non-existent. I believe that breakfast, before work or school, is important and that is where smoothies are a great help.
What’s in this Smoothie?
This strawberry and banana smoothie has 4 ingredients with an optional extra of maple syrup for sweetness if necessary. It has:
- Strawberries
- Greek yogurt
- Milk (see tips below on this)
- A sliced frozen banana. Freezing bananas that are heading to over-ripe is also a good way or preserving them for something extremely nice.
Which is best – Fresh fruit or frozen?
This smoothie is equally as nice whether the fruit is fresh or frozen. I prefer using fresh, seasonal fruit and freezing my own bananas (does anywhere supply frozen bananas anyway?) but if shop-bought frozen berries are what you have then go or it. I for one, am not willing to go without strawberries in the depths of winter so I know first hand that it works well with either.
If you use frozen bananas and frozen berries you will get an extremely thick smoothie, more akin to yogurt. So, if both fruits are frozen, arm yourself with a spoon and be ready to dig in.
Can I make this dairy-free?
You may make this dairy-free by using dairy-free milk or yogurts. I frequently enjoy this smoothie with oat milk and a soya vanilla yogurt. It is also possible to make this recipe using 1 cup of dairy free milk and omitting the yogurt completely.
Can I reduce the fat content?
It is possible to reduce the fat content by substituting lower fat versions of the yogurt and the milk.
Is this Smoothie suitable for Vegans?
This Smoothie can form part of a vegan diet if you use a non-dairy milk and a non-dairy grek yogurt. There are a lot of different kinds that are available these days. Just be sure to check the ingrdients label before you buy.
Preparing ahead
If you buy fresh fruit, freeze your own fruit or buy frozen fruit specifically to make this smoothie then you can prepare a few days smoothies ahead of time. For 4 days; freeze 4 bananas and 8 cups of fresh strawberries (or other berries) divided out into containers or bags in 2 cups amounts. If you have frozen strawberries then portion them out into bags or containers in 2 cup amounts and put back into the freezer until you need them.
This will give you 4 portions of Strawberry and Banana Smoothies ready to go.
Changes you can make the recipe
If you love vanilla flavoured things then add a 1/2 teaspoon to this recipe before you blend it. It will enhance all the lovely flavours already in the drink.
If you want more protein in your smoothie then consider adding a suitable protein powder with a flavour that will go well with the smoothie. Any additional flavours will affect how your smoothie tastes so choose wisely.
After blending stir in a tablespoon of chia seeds for a little extra fibre and omega-3’s.
If you want to add a little extra fibre and thickness to the smoothie you could soak 2 tablespoon of rolled oats in milk (dairy or non-dairy) overnight and blend with the other ingredients.
