Using just 4 ingredients, this peanut butter chocolate chip cookie recipe is going to become one of your favourite recipes. This is such a ridiculously easy recipe to make, no fuss, no bother and little washing up. They can be baked straight away as there is no need to wait for the dough to chill. These cookies make an awesome sweet snack – bet you can’t eat just one!.
I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t love cookies and if you’re a peanut butter fan then these are definitely for you. They’re sweet, peanutty and slightly crumbly with a nice hit of chocolate and are super-quick and easy to make. These cookies feel special.
These cookies are;
- gluten-free and dairy-free
- use everyday ingredients
- quick and simple to make
Ingredients in this Peanut butter Chocolate chip cookie recipe
Astonishingly, these cookies only use 4 ingredients. I really didn’t believe that you could make cookies using so little. So, the first time I went a bit wild and tried a mostly ‘peanut butter’ cookie recipe I was amazed… in a good way.
Since then, I’ve made these kinds of recipes loads of times and this one is the result of tweaking over time. This recipe now contains these four ingredients
- caster sugar – this fine grained sugar mixes into the peanut butter really easily.
- peanut butter – preferably use smooth (creamy) peanut butter. (You could make your own – try our Peanut Butter recipe)
- egg – use a large sized egg.
- chocolate chips – use dairy or dark chocolate. White chocolate works but I personaly don’t like the flavour combination as much.
Making the cookies
This is so simple. All you need to do is to add all the ingredients to your mixing bowl and stir. It may take a little bit of arm power to get it going but then it is really easy.
To make in a mixer, mix the peanut butter, sugar and egg together and once they’re combined, add the chocolate chips and stir those in by hand. This makes sure that the chocolate chips don’t get broken up by the mixing process.
Heat your oven whilst you make sure that the cookie dough is thoroughly mixed. Then, take 2 tablespoon scoops of dough per cookie and set them out on a baking tray. (I usually line this with baking parchment because it makes washing up easier… and I like that.). I usually get 12 medium-sized cookies from this amount of dough. Make them smaller or larger if that suits you better.
Flatten the balls of dough slightly using your fingers, give them a little bit of room to bake although they don’t spread much. All you have to do then is to bake them for around 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes they should be slightly golden brown around the edges but soft in the middle. Leave them to cool a little before trying to move them onto a cooling tray because they’re fragile when they first come out of the oven.
Variations
There are a few things that you can do to make these cookies a little different.
- you can use different types of chocolate; dairy or dark.
- add a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract as a flavour enhancer.
- sprinkle a little flaked sea salt on the top for that wonderful mix of sweet, salty and peanutty flavours
- you can decorate them with a few extra chocolate chips on the tops. The chocolate chips get incorporated into the dough and don’t always show on the tops fo the cookies. So, add some. They look really tempting that way.
- Omit the chocolate altogether for a 3 ingredient peanut butter cookie recipe. Decorate the tops using a fork pattern as described in this post on Peanut Butter Cookies.
Storing the Cookies
- These cookies will last for up to 3 days if stored in a suitable airtight container.
- Freezing – The dough freezes well and will last for 3 months.
- How to freeze the dough – Shape the cookies on a baking sheet that you can put in the freezer. Once the cookie dough is frozen add to a suitable freezer friendly container and freeze for up to 3 months. Bake the cookies from frozen adding two minutes to the baking time.
- Freeze baked cookies by placing them on a tray in the freezer and then storing in a suitable container once frozen. Thaw out thoroughly and bake for a few minutes to restore their loveliness. They’ll freeze for upto 3 months successfully.

Peanut butter chocolate chip cookie recipe (4 ingredients)
Equipment
- mixing bowl
- spatulas
- tablespoons
- baking sheet
Ingredients
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 3/4 cup sugar caster sugar
- 1 egg large
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Heat the oven to 350F/180C/ 160 C Fan
- Add all the ingredients to the mixing bowl and stir thoroughly to combine. If making with a mixer, add the peanut butter, egg and sugar and process. Then add the chocolate chips and stir them in. (Prevents the chocolate getting too broken up.)
- Line the baking sheet with baking parchment and roll 2 tablespoon scoops of dough into balls in your hand. Place on the baking sheet.
- Flatten the dough slightly with your hands to make a nice circular cookie shape. If you want to decorate them a little bit use any extra chocolate chips and push them carefully into the top of the cookies. (sprinkle a little flaked sea salt on top if you love that sweet, salty vibe.)
- Place in the middle of the oven and set the oven timer for 10 minutes.
- The cookies are done when they've a little bit of colour around the edges.
- Remove from the oven and allow them to cook slightly for a few minutes as they are fragile when they first come out of the oven.
- Move to a cooling tray and allow them to cool completely.
Notes
- Omit the chocolate chips for a 3 ingredients peanut butter cookie recipe.
- Sprinkle a little flaked sea salt over the top for a sweet and salty combination.
- Add a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract as a flavour enhancer.
- Decorate with a few extra chocolate chips on the top before baking.

Peanut butter and chocolate chips! Two of my mpost fave ingredients! Now I want these cookies!
Julia
These are a favourite here too. Their main problem is that they don’t last that long… they just vanish from the cookie jar 🙂
